Hi Bob, 

JIRA is not an appropriate place for general XSL questions.  

These questions should be posted to the Mulberry Technologies XSL
list.   Also, try Dave Pawson's XSL FAQ which has a section on dealing with CDATA:

The <xsl:output> element has a cdata-section-elements="qnames" attribute which you can 
use to specify which elements text nodes are output as CDATA sections: 

http://www.w3.org/TR/xslt#output

Any questions about using Xalan should be directed to the xalan-c-users mailing list 
and only Xalan defects/features should be logged in JIRA.
