Henry - thanks for that, you are right, I had recently upgraded from Tomcat 
5.016 to 5.0.30 and had forgotten to copy the Xalan JARs to the "endorsed" 
directory. I'd copied the Xerces ones and I guess in the back of my brain I 
must have presumed that my latest Java install had the latest Xalan (don't know 
why I would have thought that but anyway...). So I put the Xalan JAR in the 
right place and the problem went away. Thanks. I will unvote now...
