Not officially, no, but given that (a) there is no any public XPath API, and (b) IIUC JAXP 1.3 is not part of JDK 1.4 (or 1.3, for that matter), it would be really nice to have some migration path for users of xalan instead of leaving them out in the snowy winter, don't you think?
First, there's a public API for XPath and it is in the link that I included in my previous e-mail. Second, JAXP 1.3 can be installed on top of JDK 1.4/1.3 and it is downloadable from Java.net. Having said that, your point is a valid one. I'm not sure why the compiler class was changed, but if you file a bug/rfe on Jira someone will take a look at it and offer you a better answer or solution.
