http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc2396.txt section 3.2.1 describes the registry based authority part. java.net.URI implements this correctly (as far as I can tell). The problem occurred with a special (but correct) URI in an XSLT import element, that needs to be handled by our own registered URIResolver.
