See the patch for XALANJ-1243 for a fix for the StackOverflowException from 
thrown from XString.equals.  That patch does not resolve the problem originally 
reported by arnaud in this Jira issue.

For a patch that resolves this issue see instead the patch attached to 
XALANJ-2347.
