To the Apache Xalan-C++ Project Management Team; I am ready and willing to write and package XALAN-C++ documentation so that the product can have a formal version 1.11 release. I use the Xalan-C++ version 1.11 sources in numerous products and maintain SVN snapshots for several enterprises outside of my employment with Oregon State Police.
I wish to nominate myself (Steven J. Hathaway) as a committer to the XALAN-C++ project in support of the documentation effort. My contributor license agreement is on file with the Apache Software Foundation. In a previous job, I was a technical writer for Tektronix, Inc. responsible for writing, production, and technical editing of service and maintenance manuals for numerous products. I also have a degree in Electrical Engineering specializing in computer communications systems. I have assisted a software team in the design of a working Pascal compiler using draft specifications and was responsible for the memory management infrastructure design for compatible runtime validation of Pascal pointer data assignments. I am also the designer of numerous strategic networks and am well experienced in migrating old technologies to new platforms and infrastructures. I have since researched the W3C specification documents on behalf of State and Federal government agencies to determine the level of trust to apply toward the deployment of XML based WebService infrastructures. I also consult with network security vendors on requirements they should address in their products in order to enhance the viability and security of WebService applications in strategic and confidential network environments. I have written several libraries of custom XPath extension functions for Xalan-C++ 1.10 and Xalan-C++ 1.11 libraries compiled with GNU/Linux, Microsoft Studio 2003, 2005 and 2008. These extension function libraries are incorporated in high-performance communications products to speed-up XML transformations and minimize stylesheet complexity. Some of my custom XPath functions invoke SQL database stored procedures for complex analysis. Another library simulates a simple XPath database system using structured linked lists of key-value associations. If approved as a committer for the documentation effort, I will be asking for some technical assistance regarding documentation style and historical Xalan-C++ content. I look forward to working with the committers currently supporting the Xalan-C++ project. I will need assistance from the ASF Infrastructure Team when the new web pages for Xalan-C++ 1.11 are ready for publishing. I wish to manage a branch of the Xalan-C++ to support the documentation effort for Version 1.11. I also wish to create minor changes to the current web pages by adding links to the SVN repository so users have ready access to the newest project work. When the documentation effort is ready for publishing, the current Xalan-C++ web pages will be replaced and mirrored. When looking at the current Xalan-C++ web pages - I have a few questions regarding the tools and styles to be adopted. Should the old and undocumented Apache "StyleBook" library continue to be used? Or shall I try to adopt a newer set of tools for the project? Should the current HTML page graphics be maintained? Or would a simpler graphics design using the Apache Feather be appropriate? If the current HTML page graphics are to be maintained, then where do I locate the fonts and tools needed to generate the appropriate *.jpg title and button images? With minor edit of structured comments in *.hpp files, I have been able to generate a current set of Xalan-C++ API documentation using the newest Doxygen and GraphViz programs. There are significant structured comment changes that need to be fixed in the *.hpp files so that the Doxygen created documentation is consistent with the actual Xalan-C++ source code. I have already performed much Xalan-C++ code review and proof-of-correctness analysis on the SVN code base. Note: I do not yet have an Apache mailing address. I do subscribe to the "xalan-dev" and "xalan-c-users" lists and view the JIRA issues for Xalan-C. Sincerely, Steven J.
