"version" attribute?

I am trying to do an XSL transformation using Xalan (through the 
standards interface).  I am getting a 
TransformerConfigurationException with the error "stylesheet requires 
attribute: version".  I have both an <?xml version="1.0"?> tag and an 
<xsl:stylesheet .. version="1.0"> tag in my document.

Any idea what else this 'version' might be referring to?
