You stylesheet must create a root element before you can add text nodes. As I stated in my previous email, this template:
<xsl:template match="/">
<xsl:value-of select="//somenode"/>
</xsl:template>
creates a text node, but no root element. Try this to see if your error
goes away:
<xsl:template match="/">
<root>
<xsl:value-of select="//somenode"/>
</root>
</xsl:template>

DocumentBuilder.newDocument() function to create my [assumably empty]
documents.
