You can't do it that way. XPath and XSLT consider CDATA sections to be _precisely_ equivelant to escaping individual characters. (As does the formal XML spec itself. The DOM and SAX APIs provide this distinction as a convenience, not because CDATA markup should be considered meaningful.)
You can tell your XSLT stylesheet that the output of some elements should be expressed as CDATA sections. See documentation for xsl:output's cdata-section-elements attribute.
