See http://xml.apache.org/xalan-j/extensions.html#ext-functions, specifically the "Return values" section which describes how an extension function's return value is processed by Xalan.
I've read it. Repeatedly. But it doesn't address the question, which is that variable assignments work "properly", retaining their java type, whereas template calls convert the return type to #NODESET or similar. The question was how to make template calls work "properly" from java's point of view.
