XPath Unknown Error when using Xalan 2.3.1

I've tried the new Xalan 2.3.1 on my stylesheets that worked fine under 
Xalan 2.1.0.  Somehow I some XPath: Unknown Error exceptions somewhat 
randomly.  It points to the simple things such as @ attribute references 
and = expression in my stylesheet.  Does anyone have any idea what's 
going wrong?  I searched the mailing list but I can't seem to find 
anything useful that refers to this.  Should I stay away from 2.3 for 
the time being?
