That's because you're missing the xalansamples.jar from your classpath.
 All the stuff in \samples is precompiled into this .jar file for
convenience: you'll need to add it to the end of your CLASSPATH.

You can alternately just compile each sample's .java file into a .class
file; in that case, you'll want to add . (dot) or the current directory
to your classpath so java can find the .class file.  (Java searches any
paths in the CLASSPATH for .class files or packages; it searches any
files in the CLASSPATH as .jars for .classes within the .jar)
