I think our short-term game plan has been that interpretive Xalan would address "toolability" issues such as tracing while compiled XSLTC mode would go for flat-out speed. As XSLTC evolves I would expect to see more agressive optimization techniques that would make tracing rather difficult, so I suspect you're always going to have to make a choice between best speed and greatest programming flexibility. ______________________________________ Joe Kesselman / IBM Research
