It should be, if you mean passing the value of the variable, and if the
type of the argument to the Java code matches the type of that value. At
least, I've done it frequently with extension functions, and the details of
how that mapping is done are on the website page that describes writing and
invoking Xalan extensions.
I haven't written extension _elements_, so I can't offer you much specific
help on that front. I'm not sure offhand whether attributes on extension
elements are treated as AVTs; if they aren't, that could be your problem.
(Note that "doesn't work" is uninformative. How is the stat:save extension
actually declared in Java, how is it declared in the sylesheet, and what
actually happens when you run this statement?)
