Workaround for using DocType and Xalan 2.4.1 ??

Besides using a DOMSource, is there a work around for using
a DocType declaration to define entities and NOT get the 
submission to System.err stating that all the other elements
must be declared ??

I know this is fixed with Xalan ~ 2.5.1 but I am stuck using
a vanilla JRE which forces me to use 2.4.1.
