Rhino based compaction can encounter errors that Ant doesn't notice.

Some source files, in particular source with lexical errors, can on being
compacted produce a xapcore file that are useless, consisting as they do of a
licence statement and then a trace of the exceptions our custom Rhino has
thrown.
It would be much better if we knew of any of these problems immediately,
presumably by the compaction's returning an error code, which Ant would
recognise as a reason to abort the build.
