VerticalBoxPane: Something is throwing an exception under IE 6/7

Running the test page for this widget under IE, get a box saying that
"parentNode is null or not an object". This doesn't prevent the widget from
loading (apparently) correctly, but it might be interfering with other things
on start-up and even be the source of another bug or two on start-up.
