His reasoning is that since they're just messages, any device that doesn't
recognize them as position data will still store the information as message 
data, and the format is roughly human readable so it is still of some value 
even to those using devices that don't support the new feature.  Just like 
!DAO! (bleah), where the device still gets some value out of the new format 
packet, just not full value.  

BTW, the D700 doesn't choke on items, it just ignores them.  As it does for
objects with Base-91 compressed data.  Hence their status in Bob's book as
"deprecated."  Sigh.
