XASTIR Development List:

We need the following added to XASTIR Igate code. We have a
person working on it for Uiview Igates so the more that
implement it the better.

From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: FW: Igate message feedback packet

The APRS-IS was never fully documented and so there is no clear
definition of exactly how an Igate works or what are its
responsibilities to the network. Also, the remote-end Igate
process for taking a message packet on the APRS-IS and gating it
back to RF is not only not well defined, it is unreliable due to
a variety of settings and human error.

We need an Igate feedback packet that lets the rest of the
APRS-IS know how an Igate handled a message packet-back-to-RF at
the far end. You may have seen my posts on the APRSSIG.

I'd prefer to get a select group of active code-writers together
(who are open minded about solving the reliability of end-to-end
messaging on APRS). THen lets hammer out a solution.

Please see this web page on the proposed Igate feedback packet:
www.aprs.org/aprs12/Igate-path-report.txt

And to see the big picture (Universal Text Messaging on HAM
Radio) see:

www.aprs.org/aprs-messaging.html

Once we can see what Igates are doing at the distant end, then
we can also begin to improve our network.

Will the XASTIR team help us here? If we can get Uiview and
Xastir to implement this, maybe we can tip the APRS-IS into a
more deterministic system. I suspect you have a great
contribution to make here...

Bob, WB4APR
