My apology. I actually missed that you did read the FAQ.

Steve,

If you read my message below yours carefully, which you quoted in it's entirety with the line in question, you will see that I tried "en_US" and it is still set at that. And it didn't help the situation. I am not using RedHat. I have also tried "C" without success. I appreciate that folks think this is benign, but when there are 1/second, 60/minute, 3,600/hour, 86,400/day, 604,800/week, etc ... it can become very tedious looking for a REAL problem. And these are not just going into a simple rotated Xastir log, they are going into my system logs (for which Xastir doesn't control the rotation). So lets make this "benign" irritation go away!!!

The recommended solutions aren't working, can I have some more suggestions of where to look.

There is a solution, and it is very easy to fix.

Below is a quote from the FAQ file in the xastir directory.

4.13 Why do I see "Character '\55' not supported in font"?

   This message and similar have to do with localization and OpenMotif/
   Lesstif. For most of us this is a benign message and can be ignored.
If you simply can't stand it any more set LANG="C" or LANG="en_US". In RH 9 the default LANG is set to en_US.UTF-8 and this is where the warnings
   are coming from.

   A quick way to address this on RedHat 8 and 9 is to edit your
   /etc/sysconfig/i18n config file. I believe the original file looks
   like:

   LANG="en_US.UTF-8"
   SUPPORTED="en_US.UTF-8:en_US:en"
   SYSFONT="latarcyrheb-sun16"

   Change the "LANG=" line to:

   LANG="en_US"

   and reboot.

You did read the FAQ, right? ;-)

I've seen this on the list before, and the solutions haven't worked for me. I need to find an end to this or I'm going to have to abort Xastir as the errors fill my console and system logs to unrealistic levels.

Here's the situation. I get the following messages continually if Xastir is running:

Warning:
   Name: create_appshell text_output2
   Class: XmTextField
   Character '\260' not supported in font. Discarded.

There is one of these messages written every second or two in the log. Needless to say it's beyond ridiculous.

Previous messages recommended changing the $LANG variable. I've tried the recommended "en_US" as well as other settings. Nothing seems to stop it. The fonts I'm using are:

Menu:       courier-medium-14
Station:    clean-medium-13
Map Tiny:   helvetica-medium-8
Map Small:  helvetica-medium-10
Map Medium: helvetica-medium-12
Map Large:  helvetica-medium-14
Map Huge:   helvetica-medium-24
Map Border: helvetica-medium-14
ATV ID:     clean-medium-15

I don't recall what the original fonts were. All of these fonts exist on my system. What is character "\260' and why do we need it? It seems to be the only character that ever causes this.

Help on this matter is desperately sought.

System is Mac OS X (Leopard v10.5.6)
