Does anyone have any resource for the APRS packet format for a river

As part of our county weathernet (in conjunction with our county EOC),
I'm looking at building a river stage gauge linked to a QRP APRS
transmitter. My goal is to have them show up on Xastir for key
locations in our county. As we finish deploying our weather stations at
local fire stations (and since those are APRS digi's running on a
secondary frequency), using a QRP solar rig with a small TNC squawking
river height bolted to the side of country bridge in seems doable.
Any pointers appreciated. Read thru the APRS spec and nothing jumped
out at me.
I run Perl scripts that suck in internet information about river
gauges and generate APRS formatted packets, then inject them into
Firenet.us for everybody to see. Something like 4000 to 5000 of
them at last count. I could help you with the format if you want to
duplicate mine.
As far as the river gauge hardware itself, I remember there was
someone marketing such a thing, that would put out APRS packets
directly I think. I don't remember the company name but perhaps
someone else here does. I could do a grep through my mail folders
from a few years back and perhaps find it if necessary.
