I am very happy right now, Lee Bengston reposted his dbfawk files and
now my maps look fantastic.

Besides the dbfawk, pcre etc needing to be compiled in xastir, did
you also apply the layer priority change to your ~/.xastir/config/
map_index.sys file? That's the one where you use vi, and the 3 or 4
line global change or the nice perl script previously shared with
the list to that file. The way you described the urban areas being
covered up so the streets don't show indicates to me that the
map_index.sys file has not been changed. That *has* to be done
*after* the first time xastir has been run and/or a reindex has been
done as previously stated several times.
