I'm still seeing more questions than answers, but wonder if there are any messages in the system logs (/var/log/messages) that might coincide with the error on the console. ICE is related to the KDE libraries. So whatever it is, there's something not playing well with the desktop. I'm unable to mess with the virtual machine today so can't try to reproduce it for a while.
