Hi....i understand that ships in VK waters show up in aprs.fi
here in Townsville,Queensland there is a recieving station on Cape
Cleveland and it recieves the AIS sigs from the ships....im not sure as
to how aprs.fi gets the data

Large ships use AIS, not APRS. If you are only connected to APRS
servers, you should not see AIS data. I'm not sure where you would
need to connect to get AIS data.
