Have you changed permissions for xastir to run it as root? chmod 4755 xastir

xastir
interface control
add
serial kiss tnc

tnc port= /dev/soundmodem0
NO FULLDUPLEX NO Init KISS-mode on startup
ok
ready with XASTIR
leave the terminals running and when you are done hit Ctrl+C
on each terminal and then exit ίonce or twice, in order for
soundmodem or xastir not to get hung
these seem to work for our (very) small local xastir group
