Soundmodem works on Solaris too, so it's not just a Linux thing.
There's a mode where it appears to be a serial TNC, which is I think
the one that uses. The other mode, an AX.25 kernel networking
device, is not supported on Solaris.

Yes, technically it compiles on Solaris and makes a binary that runs, but for all the effort I put into it, I never got a good clear quality signal out of the sound card. It always seemed that the frequency was off. I could set speakers side by side one connected to the U30 and one to a PC and they didn't sound the same. That telling Solaris to generate a 6khz tone (or whatever was needed) was different from it actually doing it. I was never able to get it to work right. On the other hand, as it creates all the KISS networking you need to connect directly to Xastir, it was a great idea.

As for saving hardware, you still need to have a PTT trigger mechanism, whether it is a Rascal or something similar, so if the difference was having a rascal between the computer and the radio or having a TNC and the radio, I didn't see any difference between the two.

The U30 is turned off now, and I don't plan on bringing it back soon, so no work on that puppy.
