Use the middle mouse button to draw (or chord the left and right buttons if you have only two buttons). Click the middle button to place a vertex. Use the menu to close a polygon after several vertices are placed. When CAD object mode was written, a decision was made to have it use the middle button so that the other two buttons still function as normal.
