Subject: Black screen

I just upgraded Ubuntu to 9.04 and when I load a Canada topo map I get a black screen. All else seems to be OK. Where should I look.

1) Are you using the xastir package from the ubuntu repository, or a self-compiled one? If self-compiled, from what sources?
  2) Which version of CanadaTopo are you selecting? 250k or 50k?

My screen turned black a week or so ago (on Ubuntu 8.10), but it turned out to be the WMSRadar overlay, which mysteriously changed from black to some near-black color for the background, and the .geo file no longer treats it as transparent...

Play with your map layers. Set worldhi.map at some high layer, like 10000. Does it overlay your black screen? Are stations displayed over the black background? How about grids?

When I select the Canadatopo250k, I get a map image. When I select the CanadaTopo50k, I get no image, so I just see the default grey background. The .geo files for these selections don't contain a URL, so I can't check with a browser or wget if the server is up and functioning. It just may be a problem with the 50k server, not on your end at all.
