Success at last!
I discovered that some of my macports libraries were corrupted (I
hadn't really been keeping everything up to date). I figured that
might have caused the X problems I was seeing so I trashed it all and
installed fink. It took several hours to install ImageMagick, but
the fink script didn't hiccup once. Xastir 1.9.6 is now running fine
on my PPC Mini (Tiger 10.4.11).
