I've logged a bug in Debian requesting packaging of the 1.9.6 version,
#551578. I've also worked further to reduce the build sequence on
Debian Lenny, the stable version:
1. add source lines to /etc/apt/sources.list if not yet present,
followed by an "aptitude update",
2. obtain the build dependencies known for the older version of Xastir,
"apt-get build-dep xastir", resulting in an 82.4Mb download, 256Mb
change in disk usage,
3. download the 1.9.6 source tar.gz and unpack,
4. run the configure like this,
CFLAGS=-I/usr/include/geotiff
./configure --prefix=/usr --sysconfdir=/etc --mandir=/usr/share/man
5. compile like this,
make
6. be root and install,
make install
