Hi Rick, It is working for me on Ubuntu 10.04, with the default desktop. But, yes, it is possible that other desktops trap the key. Therefore I made the key configurable. Look in the /usr/local/share/xastir/maps/Online/OSM*.geo files. Change the value of OSM_OPTIMIZE_KEY.
