Is there a "checklist" I can run down to see that I have everything I
need and if I don't have it, a point where I can get it to properly
install version 1.9.9?

Yes. See the wiki "Installation Notes" section on www.xastir.org. There are
quite explicit steps laid out for getting Xastir built on a variety of systems,
including Ubuntu of several vintages.

From the installation notes, verbatim, that is where I am running into
the error. When I type in the ./configure...that is where I am receiving
the error about Motif Headers. I search for the errors and try to repair
from there, only this time, with Motif, I am not getting past. Here is
my error:
The motif headers should have been installed by the second "apt-get install"
line in the "Start Installing Packages" section of the wiki instructions:

sudo apt-get install cvs autoconf automake xorg-dev imagemagick gv libxp-dev
lesstif2-dev libcurl3-dev

Try redoing it and see if it gives you any indication of why it's failing to
install "lesstif2-dev".

This is what I got after I got past the motif error./
