My GPS is a Haicom 204-E Serial GPS I cut the end of the cable off and
put on a DB-9 port.. works fine with just TT4 and the radio as you can
see here

I had an old Magellan GPS that allowed you to turn the NMEA string on or
off. In order for me to upload maps, I had to turn off the string. I
usually forgot to turn it back on for the APRS station.
I don't know or remember if you said what kind of GPS you had but is
that an option on your GPS?
