soundmodem will work in duplex mode, so it can send and receive at the same

both modems, since I can receive the test message from modem0 on modem1 even
while modem1 is transmitting. I suppose I could run two X sessions and run
Xastir on each one. I could send a message from one instance and receive it
on the other.

You can do this w/o two X-sessions also: See the "-c" option in Xastir. For
instance, I have:

    alias xastir2='xastir -c /home/<user>/.xastir2 &'
    alias xastir3='xastir -c /home/<user>/.xastir3 &'

in my .alias file (sourced from .profile), so I type:

    xastir2

and I'm running a 2nd instance, which has its own home directory for storing config
files. "xastir3" gives me a 3rd instance.

Replace "<user>" with your login.

To answer your earlier question: I don't believe Soundmodem has the capability
to operate two modems on different channels, but I did hear that AGWPE had that.
