it wasn't "ls /dev/cu", it was "ls /dev/cu.*"  (the .* is part of it).

But, based on your ls /dev output, I'd hazard a guess that you don't
have drivers installed for your USB/RS232 adapter.  or you've got a
broken adapter, bad cable, malfunctioning hub, etc.
