Looks like the "xdg" package may be what I remembered, as far as a
generic tool for installing desktop menu items and icons. That
package is installed here on OpenSuSE-12.3. A snippet from one of its
man-pages:
"DESCRIPTION
The xdg-desktop-menu program can be used to install new
menu entries to the desktop's application menu.
The application menu works according to the XDG Desktop
Menu Specification at
http://www.freedesktop.org/Standards/menu-spec";
Maybe that helps. Maybe it doesn't.
