Down`t know if this helps you case I compiled my own linux for the pie (from 
source code),
for my test system and did`t use any off the one that comes with it but I have 
had success
with the 3 steps over on test board (before I build my owe ...(I down`t 
remember if I used sudo or if I was root at the time.)

I've not previously encountered build-dep but after googling I find it is invoked as apt-get build-dep <packagename>, as you have said. This leads me to believe it would only be of use with <packagename> source from the repository. I can't see how it would help with sources from elsewhere, or am I missing something?

I'm always ready to learn something new.
