Another issue with prolific and USB CDC devices (e.g. OT USB or new arduino variants) is that there is no unique identifier on the device, so if you have a prolific for the GPS, plug it in, get it configured, then plug in a second prolific for the tnc, get it configured, then reboot the computer with the devices still plugged in, the two devices may swap device special file names so that the GPS software is trying to talk to the tnc, and vice versa.
