I bought this one from Digikey /-/ http://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/USB-COM232-PLUS4/768-1034-ND/2139296 - IIRC,
acting on the advice of Jason KG4WSV.

It plugs into the Pi (directly; powered hub not needed), and other Linux computers, and works OOTB, first time, every time to provide /dev/ttyUSB0 through /dev/ttyUSB3. I use mine to drive three TNC2 compatible TNC's for an APRS gateway.

The reviews all seem to be from hams that are using it in their shacks
with radios, TNCs, embedded stuff, etc. FTDI chipset. YMMV. Offer

Good luck.

I need a recommendation for a usb->serial adapter that runs well and
is supported by Ubuntu for rig control and tncs. Looking for 2 or
more db9 serial ports.
I've got a Belkin with 4 DB9 ports. Of course I've had it for years so
it won't be made any more now. It also sat unused for years because it
had no drivers when I first got it.
I do a search on line for Linux compatibility before I make a purchase,
and try to avoid latest models.

While the advice to look for particular chipsets is noted, it's very
difficult to find out which chip is in what when purchasing online.
