Hello Dexter,

Am I on the "Bleeding Edge" here? I've seen no feedback from (other
K)Ubuntu Hams, which surprises me given surveys that show Ubuntu with
the largest share of Linux user-base.

Could be a multitude of reasons here but Kbuntu is a nitch Ubuntu derivative so
you might be better to join a few other mainstream lists for help as well.
For application specific issues, it's always best to join that specific list..
like Xastir. You're in the right place for help.

No-one using Debian (supposedly the earliest supporter of Ham Radio
in the Linux world.?

No.. there are lots of people but I've personally found that most Ubuntu users
are mostly pre-made package installers. Not as many people build
their own stuff. Of course that's an over generalization but it's more times
than not, true.
As stated earlier, with (K)Ubuntu and Raspberry Pi both
Debian-based, and both exhibiting the same config errors, I suspect
Debian has changed something.

No.. I don't think so. The previous issue was to install the require
GraphicsMagick packages per my previous message. Did you do that and then
re-run ./configure?

I noted Synaptic having a -compat and a -dev-compat and installed
them. It looks like the -dev-compat is just a wrapper - it brought in
++1-dev and ++11, plus a perl lib, but no change on fresh build.

You might want to use "apt-get" as it will show more details and output that you easily can cut & paste into email threads for help.
