It depends on the particular adapter. If it's FTDI based it will work for certain. If it's Prolific based it might work. My ATEN branded, Prolific based adapter works 100% with the RPi, for whatever that's worth.
I was trying to use the equipment I currently have rather than purchase a pi tnc.
