I've been running a Davis Vantage Pro 2 for about 6 years, and it has
been dependable. It's definitely not cheap, but it's been reporting to
the NWS all that time. In default configuration, it wants to connect to
a Windows PC, or possibly an Apple system, but there are other
independent software packages that can read the weather data and publish
to other data streams like APRS.
Things I'd do differently:
1. Avoid the Davis Instruments USB data logger. Go with the serial
interface and a PC based USB converted. The Davis USB converter is
sensitive to noise, and requires someone to reset the USB driver too
often. It may runs for weeks without issues, but then it stops transfer
of data to the PC and has to be manually reset.
2. Check out the Davis IP (Internet Protocol) data logger. It sounds as
though this can push data directly to other IP addresses or web pages.
