I recognize that not everyone views these things on a 30" monitor, and 
the search pane could perhaps be a little more compact, but vertical 
space is cheap. What's wrong with scrolling?

It's certainly not worth making the page more awkward to use and less 
flexible. And due to the way the tags work, you gain vertical space as 
soon as you select one.
