I'm sure there's an easier way :)  but  this is what I did.
__home__ = __settings__.getAddonInfo('path')
icon = xbmc.translatePath( os.path.join( __home__, 'icon.png' ) )

addon - plugin.video.flw.outdoors
version - 0.0.1
url - http://flw-xbmc.googlecode.com/svn/trunk
revision - r7
xbmc version - dharma
