Yes.
I got kicked by cptspiff about that once that i needed to a version number
;)
It indeed does prevent some broken dependencies however if you script
relies on functionality in version 1.1 and for some reason the user only
has access to 1.0 you will get script errors.
Note:
I updated the wiki page that a version number must be included.
