ok... didn't know about make dist ;) will do so from now on. Just gave it a try and ran into lots of errors (missing dependencies), which are now fixed in git at least... so the next release will get a better tar-ball ;)
Replace the tar-ball now. If it does not require an update of git, you won't have to re-tag. Never mind about the instructions in INSTALL. people don't read that anyway, and if the do, no harm is done.
