xboard uses the old Xaw widget set, which can only use the original kind of
X font, not the newer kind that Gnome, etc. use. So your choices are
limited. The fonts you like are probably all the newer kind.

There was a project to convert xboard from Xaw to GTK, but it seems to have
stalled.
