If I undstand your question correctly, this is what is known as 'zippy 
mode'. The command

xboard -zp -ics -icshost freechess.org -fcp crafty -autoKibitz

will run Crafty as bot on FICS. The -zp argument tells XBoard to use both 
engine and ICS.
