CROSS COUNTRY SKI  TRAIL REPORT


December 9, 2000

SKIER ALERT! Antlerless Deer Season This Week! Thursday, Dec. 7 - Sunday,
Dec. 10. Although hunting is expected to be lighter than the earlier
seasons, skiers should wear blaze orange or avoid trails on public land
where there may be hunting.

Current weather: Cloudy, temps in low teens.
Forecast: Temps remaining in low-high teens - low 20s. Possible snow Sunday.

ABR TRAILS - Ironwood, MI
5 inches of new lake effect snow Monday night and Tuesday morning. The
trails are really flattening out and have a dry powdery skiable surface
freshly groomed Tue. morning. 7" base. Conditions: Very Good to Excellent.
Private land - no hunting.

*AFTERHOURS CROSS COUNTRY SKI TRAIL - Brule, WI
The Afterhours Ski Trail, with the exception of the "alternate trail"
segment was groomed on Thursday, 12/7. The trail may be tracked on Friday if
enough additional snow is received overnight. Conditions are pretty good.
Skiers are advised to wear blaze orange as the trail is on state forest land
where there may be hunting. 2 new bridges and other work by the Brule Valley
Ski Club and state forest staff have widened the trail tread in several
locations and smoothed it out considerably."Alternate trail" will be groomed
after this weekend..

*AMERICAN BIRKEBEINER TRAIL - Cable/Seeley/Hayward, WI
The entire trail was rolled on Friday, 12/8.  Conditions are soft, but good.
No tracks in the north.  Don't know about tracks in the south. Skiers are
advised to wear blaze orange as the trail is on county forest where there
may be hunting.

BEAVER BROOK SKI TRAIL - Spooner, WI
Groomed 12/1 for classical and skating. Conditions: Fair.

BLUE HILLS TRAIL - Bruce, WI
Good early-season skate-skiing Wednesday afternoon (December 6) with
temperatures in the teens.  This area has received 16 inches of snow since
November 12.  The base is solid, topped off with this morning's fresh
1-inches of powder-snow.  Most of the skiing is on packed snow; in some
areas on an icy base with snow cover on the trail ranging from to 3 inches.
Some of the most consistent conditions are available from 1 to 21.  Small
bare spots and occasional rocks are still visible -- rock skis are still in
order.  Grooming of the entire EastSideTrail & WestSideTrail is anticipated
December 7 using a snowmobile and roller. Most of the EastSideTrail was
packed and rolled November 29; the back loops of the system (beyond #9) have
not been groomed.   A striding lane will be set when more snow arrives.

DRUMMOND SKI TRAIL - Drummond, WI
Will not be groomed until Dec. 11 or 12 after antlerless deer season.

*FISH HATCHERY PARK - Hayward, WI
Groomed 12/7 with a shallow track set.

FLAMBEAU HILLS SKI TRAILS - Price County, WI
About 3" of new snow. No grooming or tracks.

*HAYWARD HOSPITAL SKI TRAILS - Hayward, WI
Groomed on 12/4. Scheduled to be groomed again on 12/11.

*HAYWARD GOLF COURSE - Hayward, WI
Scheduled to be groomed again on 12/11.

*HOLY CROSS SKI TRAILS - Phillips, WI
2" of fresh snow on Thursday 12/7 and will be groomed on Saturday.  No set
tracks yet.

LADYSMITH HIGH SCHOOL LIGHTED XC TRAIL - Ladysmith, WI
The trail was rolled the evening of December 6th, after receiving about 1.5
inches of fluffy snow.  The conditions remain fair/good with the trail
surface uneven in places.  There is not a machine-set track but people have
skied in a diagonal track along one side of the trail.  The trail is within
the Ladysmith city limits, so it will not be affected by the upcoming Zone T
deer hunting season. Lights are on from dusk to 10:00 p.m.

*LOG JAM TRAIL - Phillips, WI
2" of fresh snow on Thursday 12/7 and will be groomed on Saturday.  No set
tracks yet.

LUTHER HILLS - Minong, WI
Trails hve been rolled, but insufficient snow to set track. Conditions: Fair

MECCA TRAILS - Mercer, WI
Trails to be rolled by Sunday, 12/3. Conditions expected to be Fair.

*MONTREAL TRAIL - Montreal, WI
15km groomed and track set with good trail conditions.

*MT. ASHWABAY SKI TRAILS - Bayfield, WI
Closed until 12/ 11.

*MUKWONAGO SKI TRAIL - Hayward, WI
Packed, groomed for skating and track set on 12/7/00
Conditions:  Fair, about a 2" base at this time.

*NAMEKAGON TRAIL - Namekagon, WI
Some trail clearing planned for 12/9/00
Conditions:  Poor, needs about another week before it will be ready to go.

NEWMAN SPRINGS SKI TRAIL - Price County, WI
About 3" of new snow. No grooming or tracks.

NORDIC WOODS SKI TRAIL- Stone Lake, WI
Trails have been groomed, but low snow base. Conditions: Fair.

NORTH END TRAILS - Cable, WI
3.5km loop scheduled to be packed on Thursday or Friday. 6km and 10km
sections not open. Kortelopet race course segment to be packed. Conditions:
Good.

OXBO SKI TRAIL - Price County, WI
About 4" of new snow. No grooming or tracks.

PALMQUIST'S THE FARM - Brantwood, WI
About 4" of new snow. Trails not yet open.

*PENOKEE MOUNTAIN TRAIL - Mellen, WI
Finishing up trail brushing and clearing 12/8/00
Conditions:  Poor. Surprisingly not much snow here yet.

*RED BARN TRAIL - Shell Lake, WI
Ungroomed. May be skied in.

*ROCK LAKE TRAIL - Cable, WI
Conditions:  Poor - This area still needs more snow.  The trail has not been
packed, groomed, or track set.

*SAWYER BROOK TRAIL - Shell Lake, WI
Ungroomed. May be skied in.

SEELEY SKI TRAIL - Seeley, WI
Low snow base and rutted areas from hunting season. Rock skis recommended.
New snow should improve conditions.

*SOLBERG LAKE TRAIL - Phillips, WI
2" of fresh snow on Thursday 12/7 and will be groomed on Saturday.  No set
tracks yet.

SPOONER CITY TRAIL - Spooner, WI
Groomed 11/29 for skating and classical. Conditions: Fair to Good.

*TELEMARK SKI TRAILS - Cable, WI
35km of trail will open this weekend. Trails will be open from 9AM to 4PM,
Friday, Sat., Sunday until the Christmas holiday when trails will be open
each day except Tuesday. There is a 3-4 inch packed base. Trails are
scheduled to be packed on Thursday and track set on Friday. Conditions
should be quite good. Skiers are advised to wear blaze orange as Telemark
trails do cross county forest where there may be hunting. 10km are on
Telemark property posted "No Hunting."

TIMBERLAND HILLS SKI TRAILS - Cumberland, WI
All trails have been groomed and are in fair condition

TIMM'S HILL/HIGHPOINT SKI TRAILS - Ogema, WI
About 4" of new snow. No grooming or tracks.

* TOMAHAWK LAKE SKI TRAIL - Barnes, WI
Insufficient base to set track.  Trail will be groomed following the
Sunday/Monday (Dec 3/4) snow.

*TOTOGATIC TRAIL - Minong, WI
Grooming was completed Thurs at 1:00 pm. A and B loops are packed, tracked
and in good condition. C loop is packed, tracked and in fair condition. D
loop is packed but not tracked; there are still a few passable but not
trackable wet spots in the swamp section.

TREGO LAKE SKI TOURING TRAIL - Trego, WI
Tracks skied in. Conditions: Fair to Good.

* ULLER TRAIL - Iron Belt/Montreal, WI
Groomed and track set - 12/8. Conditions:  fair to good.

VEIKKO SKI TRAIL Marengo, WI
Back country trail. Ungroomed.

*WEST TORCH TRAIL - Clam Lake, WI
Working on brush clearing 12/8/00. Conditions: Poor

WINTERGREEN SKI TRAILS - Fifield, WI
About 4" of new snow. No grooming or tracks.

WOLVERINE NORDIC - Ironwood, MI
All trails of the system open and groomed for skating and striding. Heavy
snow on Monday and Tuesday have left conditions somewhat soft, and we will
continue to groom daily to try and get conditions stiffened up. Overnight
temps in the below zero range should allow great conditions for the weekend.
On Sunday Dec. 10, Trek & Trail will have a snowshoe demo from noon to 5 at
our base chalet area. There is no charge for this activity.
