TRAIL CONDITIONS

 

 Dec. 28, 2001


GENERAL CONDITIONS: Temperatures high near 10F. Scattered snow showers with 1-2" accumulation possible. Bayfield, Ashland, and Iron Counties and Gogebic County in Mich. continue to receive light to heavy lake effect snow with significant accumulation near Hurley/Ironwood area.
Lake Skiing: Many smaller lakes in the area may be skiable. Check with locals for ice conditions.

ABR TRAILS
Ironwood, MI
All trails open. 4-10 inch base. Conditions: Very Good.
 
 AFTERHOURS CROSS COUNTRY SKI TRAIL
Brule, WI
Recieved about 14" of fluffy snow. This has compacted to a 1-3" base. The trail currently provides fair skiing conditions with occasional twigs and possibly a rock or two sticking through. Tracks will be set when there is a consistent 3" base, possibly by the weekend.
 
 
AMERICAN BIRKEBEINER TRAIL
Cable/Seeley/Hayward, WI
The trail was rolled from "OO" south to Hayward. On Friday the trail will
be rolled from "OO" north to the Powerline. There is not enough snow at this time to set a track. Conditions: Fair toGood skiing with rock skis.

After parts of the trail were packed for skating Monday afternoon (December 24), skiing in some areas was very nice, in other areas it "wasn't too bad." Rock skis recommended. The same portion of the trail system that was packed December 23 will be rolled again today (Friday, December 28). Other parts of the trail may be packed by snowmobile. Because of low snow conditions, caution is recommended on downhills.

Approximately 36 KM of the Telemark and North End trail system have been groomed for skating. This includes the Birkebeiner Loops, Tony Wise Trail, John Bauer Trail (to Kortelopet split), Kortelopet Trail (from 9 KM to 23 KM), North End Trail, Bill Koch Trail on the south side of Mt. Telemark, Sven Wiik and Caldwell trails. Classical tracks have been set on the Birkie Loops and the Kortelopet Trail from 14 KM to 23 KM. Tracks are a bit thin in spots but good in most sections. Rock skis advised.

Wolverine Nordic trails have recieved 48" of snow since 12-23. Currently 7km are groomed for skating and striding. The additional 10km of trails will be opening as soon as possible, they are skiable but are not quite ready to be declared open. Forecasts call for an additional12" of snow today and tonight.
